Us silver spoon Orange County folks sometimes forget that not all kids get the same exposure to Dr. Seuss and Mercer Mayer and cozy bedtime stories with warm milk as we did. As teachers, we often must fill the gap that poor parents can’t fill. Meaghan Montrose has a great article with some excellent suggestions. Below is a quotation, I recommend you follow the link and read the whole article.

“1. Find reading material that interests your child. If your son or daughter is interested in sports, try subscribing to a magazine such as Sports Illustrated for kids to stimulate their interest. 2. Make books a reward or treat instead of forcing them on your child. Give your child books as a gift for their birthday/holiday or give them a gift card so they can pick out their own. This helps to make books exciting and something to look forward to. 3. Read together. Find a book you are both interested in. You can take turns reading aloud to each other or read separately, then discuss.”
