My final word on this? maybe …
I think bloggers should learn on one blog at first. Until you get your bearings and learn how to do the stuff you envision on one, your other blogs will simply be like categories and much more complicated. This saps mental energies. Having said that, multiple blogs can expose you to new audiences and help you craft posts to them in due form. This will make you a better writer and you may find that one niche is better for you than another. The problem is when you run from one that is incomplete to a new one and so on. Be a master of one (even if you have little traffic) rather than a jack of all trades even if it may show a short-term boost in traffic. Once you’ve mastered HTML, Google PR, Sitemaps, CSS if you want to do the art yourself, or whatever tools you need to feel empowered (it is somewhat never-ending if you let it be) … then go ahead and have multiple blogs, if you still want to.
Post-script: I have learned since I wrote this that to make money doing sponsored posts (real money that is like 200-300 bucks a month) you MUST have multiple established blogs. The blogs become the Ferrari parts of your blog-making vehicle. Unless of course you are getting like 50k hits a month on one blog, then you should enjoy and prosper with the one … congratulations! Unfortunately, most of us are not in that boat so multiple blogs make sense.

I have several blogs (1- management, 2- investing, 3- science) myself it works pretty well. Most posts naturally fit with only one blog, occasionally (a couple times a year) I will actually cross post to several blogs.
I have found that having multiple blogs helps quite a bit. I’m up to so many now that I’d have to stop and count them all to tell you how many I have! At first I thought maybe I was distracting myself too much, but now I’ve decided its well worth it, especially as each one grows little by little :)
@Chelle: Great comment Chelle. Thanks for sharing your experience with multiple blogs.
I have one and it’s hard enough!
