Blog Stats for the month of January, 2009
This is a monthly feature here where I measure my 3 blogs’ progress. My goal with this series is to provide 100% transparency. You can browse current and past entries in the CAN… category. First I list the CAN data for each blog. Then I reflect with a few notes. Blue collar workers use safety equipment to have a long career the way I use this system.

Notes: January was great for me because I created a spreadsheet to monitor my earnings.  This made it so much easier to report them here for you.  In the past I have always had to go back to each service and add up my earnings for the month.  This often took over an hour.  I don’t know why it took me so long but now I just put the earnings in a spreadsheet each month.  I’ve linked the spreadsheet as an Excel (.xlsx) file if you’d like to download it for your own use.

January was also a nice month for the blogs due to my PageRank of 2 on all three of them.  While 2 is hardly a high rank, it draws enough advertising and sponsored posts work for me to feel accomplished.  My personal goal was $400 this month and I made just over half of that.  I will bring my goal down to 300 for February and we’ll see if I can do it.  It will take dedication and attention to seo.  I told my wife tonight at dinner that it isn’t hard to write the sponsored posts on weird stuff like lingerie or health insurance … but it is very hard writing the quality non-sponsored posts in between to keep my readers engaged and interested.  I would recommend you NOT try and make money blogging unless you are willing to be very meticulous and work many hours.  I have a hope my income will skyrocket one day but for now, it looks like it will hover around the $300/month zone.  The feed subscriber counts went up and down.  I am trying to keep my focus simply on the CAN criteria but I have been considering including feed counts somehow.  here were the results on those ending January:

RSS FEED Subscriptions:
Postcards from the Funny Farm: 121
Damien at the Speed of Life: 26
Dynamite Lesson Plan: 8

I should mention that I started a full fledged webcast in January.  I started tracking analytics on it tonight so next month you may see it included in this feature.

Focus in February will be on taking every writing job that is available to me, except .  Their new payouts are an insult.  ie; fifty cents for 100 words.  Unreal.  If this is the future, we are all doomed.  I started a Kontera campaign yesterday so I will be monitoring their payout in addition to all my other campaigns in February.  I will also obviously be focusing on excellent non-sponsored posts and driving more traffic to my two smaller blogs.  Postcards is going strong and I hope it will continue on it’s own momentum.  I have developed good seo and writing habits and they show in that blog’s results.

As always, I want to be open to your questions and comments through this series.  The comment box is waiting for you.  You’ve seen my results read my notes, what do you have to say? Is there something I missed you’d like to discuss?  How were your CAN results last month?
