I’ve been writing songs since I was a wee youth. I post Mp3’s and videos of my music here.

Last night I played a 90 minute set at the Grind in Apple Valley, CA. It’s a wonderful place and I really enjoyed playing my music there. I used an SM58 mic through a Carvin portable PA. I had planned 45 minutes of songs I have memorized and then another 45 mins of songs I printed the music out for. As luck would have it, I realized just as I started, I’d left the music at home! Yipe! Needless to say … I improvised.

Most the night there were at the most 15 people in the place so it wasn’t a large crowd. This was probably due to (I was told by 2 people) the rain outside. Apparently people like to stay home when the showers begin. I wish more people knew about the Grind because it is a really hip coffee house that features live music. They have giant paintings of great jazz and rock musicians inside and the place has a real laid back, artistic feel to it. If you get a chance you should definitely check the place out.

It was a great time and I wand to thank the staff there as well as the people who walked past me as I played my tunes. Those who sat and listened for a while, especially the couple who requested REM, you made my night. You rock. Below is my “intended” set-list from last night. I did play most of them but the ones I just absolutely had no clue on the lyrics I skipped. I was fortunate enough to be given another night to play in April so I am looking forward to that. I already have a request to do REM’s “So Central Rain” from the Grind Facebook page. You can keep up with my upcoming shows at the Grind and elsewhere on Myspace: damienrileytunes BOOKMARK IT!

Reflections on: My First Set at the Grind Coffee House

Charlie Ray and Linda were kind enough to ask me to play after them tonight at the Grind in Apple Valley. I played for about 20 minutes since my kids were there and running through the place. Truth is, Sarah was great about it and brought them outside but I didn’t want to put her and them at too much of an inconvenience.

I sort of envisioned it as a “covers” night since it was my first time playing there. Many great singer/songwriter song-lists were taped on my guitar but some highlights were: The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Jackson Browne and I got to play lead guitar in a “trio” of the Song Charlie and I wrote together: “Land of the Living.” His musical cohort Linda has spot on harmonies in that song. I really apprecited talking to Sierra Donovan, Charlie’s wife after the show. She is also a Jackson Browne fan and a fellow writer/blogger. Sarah and I hope to see more of them in 2010.

Here’s a link to the venue.  Charlie Ray and Linda have played professional country there for 2 years paying tribute to the classics as well as some modern stuff. Whenever they play live, I warmly encourage you to head out and catch their show. There is a pretty good possibility I will be playing the Grind again soon for a 90 minute set so stay tuned! Thank you to Charlie and Linda for recommending me and getting me the contact. Below is a map and a phone number to the Grind where I hope to show up once in a while.
