The Time Traveler’s Wife – Review

My wife suggested we see The Time Traveler’s Wife last night and so we had a late date night.  The movie was slow at first but once it got going, I found it to be touching and human.  It brought up a lot of things to talk about on the ride home. The Time Traveler’s Wife (TTTW) is a romantic drama starring Eric Bana as the Time Traveler, Henry DeTamble, and Rachel McAdams as his wife, Clare Abshire.  It was directed by Robert Schwentke. He has directed a proud set of films the most famous of them being “Flight Plan” with Jodie Foster.  There are other cast actors of note you can find at The Time Traveler’s Wife IMDB page. Minor spoilers ahead.

Henry “travels.”  His wife might as well have a bumper sticker that says “travel happens.”  They don’t have any idea why he does or when it will happen.  This makes for a lot of stress in both their lives as they try and have a normal marriage and baby while he is “beaming up” all the time to certain locations. At times he may be a writer doing weight loss pill reviews and at others he is talking to a young girl in a meadow.

One place he travels repeatedly is the meadow where he first met Clare.  She was a 9 year old wandering off in search of imaginary friends.  He knows what to tell her so she isn’t afraid because he is with her in the future. Theirs is a rocky relationship with some seductive kissing but far more moments of distrust, acute fear, and resentment.  At one point he says to her, “You made a choice.” to which she replies indignantly, “I NEVER had a choice.”  In a way I think that’s true because when someone comes from the future claiming to know all your desires, and you’re 9, it’s probably quite hard to resist that fantasy.  In this case, the fantasy was all too real.

You see all the token time travel issues come up here.  There is talk of how you cannot change certain things.  There is foreshadowing of his death before it happens.  There are some interesting twists that can only be possible when you have a time travel theme. The basic crux of the movie is Clare’s growth.  She herself “travels” mentally from a 9 year old girl in love with a man who visits her in the meadow to a 30-something woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown married to a “spontaneous” time traveler.  There are times he is in the room one minute and then there is nothing but his clothes collapsed on his shoes. Imagine going through a marriage that way?

Her undying love for him is what’s worth watching.  Bana is a little bland in my opinion.  I think just about anyone could play his role.  Rachel McAdams, on the other hand, is perfectly suited for the role.  As I watched I was impressed by the emotion she could summon in many of the scenes.  I have a feeling when you see her cry, those are HER tears.  I wouldn’t say her performance is Oscar worthy but it comes close, darn close.  Part of the problem might be the writing.  While much of it was poetic, there was a lot of the same stuff between man and woman we’ve seen again and again.  Like I said though, once the uneventful beginning is through, the middle to end is a wonderful, sometimes difficult, always romantic human love story.

I haven’t fought back a tear since “Meet Joe Black” played in the theater.  This one had that effect on me.  I’d say this movie is mostly for married people in their late 20’s and up.  Some of this stuff I have lived through and the time travel aspect really allows the movie to delve into relationships and love and purpose in life. I’d give it 8/10. Have you seen it?  Care to comment on any of these topics I’ve mentioned?  Please do comment below.

GonzagaI have been a proponent of higher education for years. Now, in the advent of online education, I am recommending that mode as well. A lot of people see college as a chance they take in life. Trust me when I say: Gonzaga Online University is not a gamble. You get results.  If you are looking for an online degree in business or leadership, you can earn your degree there online and reap the real benefits of an accredited education. An online degree today is more rigorous in many ways than a traditional one. The curriculum at Gonzaga is rigorous and aims to develop the body, mind, and spirit of the student.

To back up what I am saying, Gonzaga University is ranked number 3 in the West by US News and World Report. This is quite an achievement for an online university. Also, the Princeton Review and Forbes Magazine rank it among the highest quality of online college. Interested yet? The list goes on … Kiplingers Personal Finance ranks Gonzaga a best value among private universities.

It isn’t always possible or students to attend traditional classes. That is why Gonzaga offers several of its masters degrees online. I encourage you to explore what value their online programs can offer you.

I find this stuff vastly interesting because it is raw human emotion. When people are anonymous, they tend to shine a light on the truth of our experience. You don’t know if they are kings or queens living in manufactured homes or paupers on the street mailing their thoughts in. It’s a human equalizer. Try Secret Archive on your Twitter: secretarchive

On Turning 40

Me 1989 at 19

Me 2009 at 39

I’m celebrating my 40th birthday today.  Here’s a few words on how I feel about it.  American media shows us that it’s better to be young than old. I am not saying I’m old, but when I first heard the words “You’re turning 40″ I began to think about what it might mean to me. Some countries and nationalities, like Native Americans for example, see the value in wisdom that comes through age. I agree with that notion and I’ve always respected what my elders had to say to me. Have you noticed the way older Native Americans are always so at peace in pictures? I think I’m beginning to know why. They’ve seen life pass by in cycles of thankfulness. “Will we have corn?” The angels brought corn. “Will we have horses, the wind brought horses.” “Will we have the wisdom to know what to do?” The full moon brought the wisdom.

When I was younger I had a lot of anxiety about what I would end up being be and who I would be. My 20’s were just utter craziness finishing college and trying to “be someone.” My 30’s were a time of growing into my own skin. It was through my 30’s I learned the value of defining and avoided distorted thinking. To this day, those ideas of modern psychology by Albert Ellis still help me stay thankful for all I have. “Overgeneralizing,” “I must do this or else …” All the stuff he has defined as negative energy. I have become a life-long student of psychology and I will always respect what it is for people. Also in my 30’s I met my lovely wife Sarah.

She was a waitress and a teaching student at the local community college. Those were pretty neat things, but the fact that she was a freckle-faced cutie quickly won me over all the way. Seriously though, Sarah has so many talents that keep the Rileys going, it would astound you if you saw them all. Just one example is this party.  everything from booking the place, to inviting all of you, to the slide show, it’s all her.  Thank you honey for making my birthday awesome.

I am so lucky to be sharing my 40th with her. If you know her, you know what I mean about her giftedness. I became a somewhat instant Dad and Brandon has taught me a lot about being a good member of a family and being a good person. As for teaching me to be a better dad? I don’t know how much better I get but we keep trying and we never give up trying to do better.  I love you son.

My baby girls Isabella and Julianna are 2 other of my delights. What man could ask for more than to hear his name screamed with joy every time he walks in the door from work? They have both shown me signs of nothing less than genius through their speech and drawing and sense of humor skills. We have been blessed with so much which the pictures tell a story of. I came up here for a job interview where it all began in August of 2002. Now, I am a lead teacher in my District. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that. I worked a long time to get there so I will say I am an example that if you stay true to what you want and give it your best shot, you will make it.  It doesn’t have to depend on your ancestry dna. Last, like the peaceful Indian … getting older is cool because you see that everything is going to be okay.  Just hang in there.

40 is great … every decade is great … it just gets better.  Thank you all for coming … cheers!

4Domains :: One of the Best Webhosts Around

su button  Twitter button  pingfm

VPS Hosting has gained a lot of ground in past years. It’s a hosting plan that is well sought after. That’s why I’m taking the opportunity today to recommend a VPS Hosting company I use: 4Domains. They offer personal and business hosting as well as domain registrar. In fact, they are an ICANN registered domain provider. There are so many reasons people like yourself would use this company but one might be to make the jump from a free hosting provider such as “blogger” to your own self-hosted site with software like Wordpress. This is the format I have used for my blogging since Dec. of 2006. I feel it has a lot more to offer you than the free hosted blogs. Having said that, hosting at 4Domains is quite affordable. Check out their prices.

Just a couple of the noteworthy qualities of this service are:

  • Open source control panel: This means you have added access to your account files.  You can make tweaks here that aren’t available on some other hosting servers.
  • You can host unlimited domains: Most companies put a cap on this.  At first when you’re hosting you might think you don’t need many of these but as you start to see the income of hosting multiple domains, this feature becomes quite attractive.
  • Other attractive features include: rebootable server, and a dedicated IP address for VPS.

It’s an excellent service, try for your hosting needs.

CiteFast Automates MLA and APA Citations

We live in a microwave society where we want everything done FAST! From a speed-dating service to fat burner pill, we want it effective and fast. I’m seeing this for more and more services. I ran across this amazing resource for you college students out there writing research papers.  When I was in  college, I used to put all my sources on 3×5 cards and shuffle them around to get them included and then listed correctly in the MLA or APA format.  This makes all that so much easier.  With CiteFast, the “Works Cited” page virtually automated and all you have to do is place the quotations in your paper.  My advice is to bookmark this tool!  Click on the image to go to the site.

Tycoon Blogger :: think big

Tycoon

There’s a blog emerging that you should know about. If you value tips and tricks that help you up, Tycoon Blogger needs to be on your regular reading list. I have explored this site and felt so helped and encouraged by the blogger’s posts that I went into blogging tonight encouraged and energized. To me, that’s worth more than dollars! Do yourself a favor and put this blog on your reader for a week as an experiment. I think you’ll find as I have this is one of the next rising Earth shakers.

Tycoon Blogger is Dan Keller who is based in Pennsylvania. Through his various post comments, one can see he is well networked with many recognizable and quality bloggers weighing in. He is a Twitter specialist so check out his articles on that. Dan admits on his about page that the word “Tycoon” is a bit ambitious but that is just how he is: a big thinker. I agree it is good to set your goals high and I feel his blog has more to offer in motivation and unique encouragement than in how to make money online. Of course, my friends know I believe that is the secret way to make money: through valuing people and providing helpful content. One example of how this “MMOL” blogger is breaking the mold is through this post where he names his picks for top ten bloggers. You won’t find John Chow or Shoe Money on the list. These are street-level start-ups that he thinks are gonna soar.  I have much more to say about this excellent blog but I’ll let you make your own call.

Dan’s “Tycoon Blogger” has a lot of positives you should check out. Reading content there will definitely enhance your blogging experience.

Grade A Couch Cuddling Movie – Curse of the Jade Scorpion

su button  Twitter button  pingfm

I watched Woody Allen’s Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001) with my wife tonight and it was just as good as the previous times I have seen it. There are movies you call “good writing” because they hit a formula well. Those movies you wish you would have written yourself to collect the box office dough. I call these writers “masters of the obvious.” Then there are movies that are so articulate and so perfectly woven together that you prefer to just sit back and be entertained, knowing you could never produce such artistry. Woody Allen’s movies are usually like that for me. The first Allen movie that really caught my attention and made me say “wow” was this one.

It takes place in the 1940’s. A fairly simple plot is the canvas Allen uses for his unique, proven brand of romantic humor. Charlize Theron, Helen Hunt, and a few other bombshells make it a sexy romantic comedy that is quick on dialogue replete with the ingredient he is famous for: poking fun at himself. It’s a mystery, gumshoe detective tale with Woody Allen humor throughout. IMDB summarizes it as: “An insurance investigator and an efficency expert who hate each other are both hypnotized by a crooked hypnotist with a jade scorpion into stealing jewels.”

I saw this movie around 2002 when my parents had rented it and loaned to to me. Since then I must have rented it 3-4 times myself. Tonight my wife and I watched it again. It was a grade A couch cuddling movie and I recommend it. We needed a break from putting in our new Delta faucets bathroom fixture. Sometimes those romantic breaks can mean everything.

What’s your take on Woody Allen movies?
