Blog Safari

Hello there! You’re invited to hop in the yellow Jeep and come along on the blog safari. I found a few prize animals this week and I’m excited to share them with you. From religion to Google PR, you’re in for a treat. Feel free to lean out of the jeep and put yourself in grave danger because as you know … it’s not a real safari ;)

BTW: Thanks for checking out these links I valued this week. To read more of the posts I find valuable and/or entertaining check out all my favorites on .

Vital Signs at Express Image Publications
This quote came to mind after reading this article: “Some people in the world that make it hardest to be Christians are other Christians.” -Dr. Ron Enroth

Thanks to authors like Chuck Smith Jr, for shining light on what being a Christian looks like, in “Vital Signs.”

Angela Maiers Educational Services: The Path Towards a…
I love this notion. It has to do with taking control and being a “mother hen” over you babies, your students, whatever you call them. Fostering organic and high levels of learning is what it is all about:
From the post: “We should all be looking for ways of creating the conditions for learning as an education organization, a classroom teacher, a leader or as a coach. We should always seek to create an environment where people (ALL people) feel entrusted with the mission and equipped with the tools, training, and systems to succeed.”

Why The The Struggle For PR Is A Waste Of Time at WassupBlog
From the article “…you’d be better off trying to improve your SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) because that’s what’s going to send people to your blog, not a high PR. As far as I’m concerned the only time PR would be a factor is if it affected my SERP! Say, for example, there were 6 or more sites all relying on the same search term and Google decided that the one with the highest PR went to the top of the page, only then would it have some value for me. Other than that I reckon it’s all a waste of time.”

Earnings for December 2009 on Dragon Blogger
These are great blog-stats that show how money is made in the trade. Online publishing is an art form and not all companies pay out well for all bloggers. It is a process of finding out what pays for you and what you can live with in regards to what you consider value.

Art that Matters at Confident Writing
I love the idea of determining “value” for online publishing. Confident Writing gives a great quote by Seth Godin to get the writing year off to a high “art” start. Sometimes ideas are as good as http://www.humangrowthhormone.org to gain success.

Blog Safari 1-1-10

Hello ladies and gentleman, I thank you for taking another ride in the yellow Jeep. You have joined me for a blog safari. These blogs have something special to say and I take you through their stories. Please feel free to keep your hands and feet out of the vehicle while moving (it’s a cyber trip as you know). Hopefully you will learn on this safari, among other things, the reason I look up to these giraffes. Here we go!

Costa Rica Day 6 at Tyler Ingram dot com – Tyler has the best photoblog I’ve seen. He also has some excellent narrative in this story about his Costa Rica trip. Most notable are the spiders on people’s faces.

My New Years Resolution 2010 at The Personal Blog of Justin Germino – Justin is transparent about his years successes and failures. I encourage you to head over there and give your blogging resolutions for the new year. I did :)

2010 Honey at Derek Semmler dot com – I’ve gained a lot of blog and cyberculture knowledge from this dude. It is great to see him back in the blogging game. His monthly money updates are what inspired me to create my CAN Blog Stats post feature at my personal blog. Welcome back Derek.

Resistance to Change? It’s Going to Happen Anyway at It Might be Love – This is a great sentiment and lesson for us all. The more things change the more they stay the same. If you can get used to the changing, you’ll be successful and content in life.

Configuring CommentLuv Display Options at It’s all a Matter of Perspective – I agree this is one of the best plugins available in the repository. This is a great article for understanding how to set the display.

Hyenas and Secret Cheerleaders at Happy Making – The psychologist in me got very into this post (or maybe it was the loony bin patient inside me). It is well written with an excellent point about thinking positively. Thanks Heather for writing this.

Another Chance to get it Right at Everyday Gyaan – In the pool of New Year’s posts, this one rings true and refreshing. This is a new voice I recently added to my reader and will be watching in the New Year.

Google Finishes off 2009 by Waving the PR Wand at Wassup Blog – Another new read on my list gives a perspective on Google PageRank. I agree 100% that Google PageRank has no reliability or usefulness to the marketplace. It’s only a matter of time before we all go transparent and advertisers use that to measure “the importance of a page.”

Yannick’s Debts at classroom as microcosm – This post is from about a month ago but I’m including it because it really has an intriguing question for the reader: When do you live by the letter or the law and when do you deliver mercy? As a teacher this is an everyday dilemma.

What’s this kid doing on Youtube? at Angela Meiers – When people ask me about the future of the internet I tell them one thing: “more video.” In this post, Angela shows how Youtube can be used as a tool to teach.

See you on the next safari.

Just posted this list on my Dynamite Lesson Plan blog. Here is an excerpt and link to the article on free online math resources for teachers:

In my career teaching elementary math I run across excellent free tools all the time. These tools are awesome and all free. I update my list from time to time and below you will find the latest from me. There are banks of math problems for kids, interactive games about math, and phenomenal math teaching tools. I hope you find this list helpful.

Ma.gnolia FAILs and Loses all Data

I’ve been wanting to use the pop culture speak “Fail” in a post title for months … I finally got my chance. Ma.gnolia had a melt down. Were any of you really vested in them? I was a user but rarely saved stuff there. If you lost everything are you pissed? Do you care? I guess they are starting as “gnolia” now. Sad. Bow out gracefully I say. It’s not like we are dying for another social bookmarks site … right?

Maybe this is a wakeup call to all of us trusting free websites with our data. Twitter maybe?

There was a meltdown at bookmark sharing website Ma.gnolia Friday morning. The service lost both its primary store of user data, as well as its backup. The site has been taken offline while the team tries to reconstruct its databases, though some users may never see their stored bookmarks again.

Get Psychotherapy Online – Skip the Office Visit

I wrote a post over at Postcards. As I researched through a simple Google Search, I learned a lot about this new phenomena of getting therapy on line. I feel this is extremely good for our society. I think a lot more people who need psychotherapy will now get it. Scroll down for an excerpt and some links:

My Therapy Net – Online Therapy is getting the guidance you need in the most convenient and discreet way possible – from anywhere, at any time. Meet with your provider online using webcam, chat, audio and/or phone.

the Counselors.com – Professionals at the Counselors.com provide online counseling, coaching, consulting, information and referral just like you receive in their physical office. However, online therapy services are not intended to take the place of traditional face-to-face therapy, conventional clinical assessment, or treatment.

I think this new platform for therapy is a good thing with a lot of potential to help people who suffer from depression or other mental illnesses.

Would you try online therapy?

A Great Story to Tell Kids about Patriotism in the Classroom

Miss CalcUl8 (pictured left) is a great writer.  I enjoy her stories on my Google Reader very much.  Tonight I had to feature this one. It was too great! What’s here is just summary intro, click on the image to read the original story on her blog … enjoy :)

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High school in Little Rock AK, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. Looking around, confused, they asked, “Ms. Cothren, where’re our desks?” Everything was gone but the spinning ceiling fans She replied, “You can’t have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk.”
