Concrete Kids

Teaching is a very fine science (and art).  When dealing with kids, you are doing a constant dance back and forth to make sure your words are understood.  There are vocabulary and idioms they don’t understand in stuff grownups say every day.  They get confused and often we never know it.

Check for understanding.

One way to lessen this is to be constantly if not periodically “checking for understanding.”  This is NOT meant to be “forward questioning” such as, “Okay, can you tell me what a foreman is?” No!  Instead, CFU is when you teach what a foreman is and then check for understanding with a question or whiteboard etc.

Kids are very concrete.  That means they think in black and white.  You can take them to higher levels of understanding through CFU and good old fashioned patience.
