Custom Header Images

A. Careless tweaks kill themes
I can’t tell you how many people have emailed me in virtual tears saying they tries to tweak their Wordpress theme and completely wrecked the design. Tweaking themes is not for beginners folks. Come to think of it, it isn’t even for advanced users much either. The concept of tweaking a theme to put in a picture is nonsensical. There are millions of themes out there available to you that have a custom header spot. Many times it will show up in the appearance area as a link so you can upload it right there (Kubrick, K2, etc.). Don’t tweak your themes. The creators worked really hard to make them work. Your mind is not theirs. The most tweaking I would do is changing a picture in the images folder to one of your own the same size. Other than that, save it for the pros (of which I am not one).

Before I move on to “B” I wanted to plug North Carolina real estate and rentals.  If you vacation there I have a great resource for you: Outer Banks rentals. Check it out and see what I am talking about.

-Okay, back to “B”-
B. Find a theme, replace the image
Already touched on this but wanted to reiterate. Every image you see in any theme can be replaced with your own custom image. Mess with this but not with the code.

C. What about randomness?
Rotating headers are interesting sometimes. I most like them when they are well chosen, telling photos. Still, we are trying to create brands with our blogs so I would avoid a random header that is all over the place subject-wise. Until you are known that is. Use flickr to get a badge of your rotating photos and put that down the sidebar. Don’t mess with random in the header, it just makes you more muddy in pupose and people might mistake your identity.
