The Duke Fightmaster Show :: Performance Review

Since he quit his day job, Duke no longer gets those beloved periodic work reviews.  I’m sure he misses them, so here’s my review of his show:

The Duke Fightmaster show films live each week downstairs at Legion Hall in Laguna Beach, California at precisely 8:30pm.   The star of the show has a commanding yet unassuming presence. He’s a real nice guy too!  This is refreshing given the typical egos that drive talk shows like Conan Obrien and JayLeno.  Duke is definitely his own brand.  I’d put him in a universe closer to the offbeat stuff of David Letterman.  He leads a cast of enthusiastic regulars that share his vision. (His sidekick Ryan’s odd physical humor is hilarious and worth mentioning).  Check out this sample of the show on Youtube, then read the rest of the review below:

As I announced in a previous post, I was asked by a gifted writer and producer to be on the show.  I appeared there last night and it was very cool.  The episode hasn’t posted yet but stay tuned.  Duke interviewed me on the topics of blogging and podcasting.  It was a short interview, as they customarily are, but I enjoyed the terse experience immensely.  I felt like a kid away at camp pulled up onstage to do skits with the counselors.  I’ll be attending as an audience member in the future for sure.  It’s free and open to the public.  Could this be the Rocky Horror tradition of talk shows?  Why not?  It films in close proximity to Balboa Island where the cult classic played at midnight for well over a decade.  That’s almost the vibe I get.

Duke is a guy in his thirties with a wife and two kids who quit his job to create and host a tv show.  Instead of waiting for a contract from NBC or CBS, he rented a space in Laguna Beach and orchestrates a web show each Friday.  Compelling interviews with an eclectic mix of live music acts and a smart sexy assistant make it a great night of entertainment.  Though the show banners Duke’s name, the cast is all integral to the impact of the show.  This is performance art at its best.  The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. My apologies that I can’t review every cast member here in the interest of time but please check out their bios at the show’s home page.

The Duke Fightmaster Show is archived on YouTube and on its official website.  If you have a big heart for PEOPLE and all their endeavors (specifically in Orange County) you will want to subscribe as I have.  The biggest appeal of this show for me is its celebration of the human spirit.  Duke and his cast are doing amazingly cool things in that Legion Hall, check them out before a tv network snatches them up and off of youtube.

My final performance review for the Duke Fightmaster show? 11/10 “Exceeds Standards!”
