I worry about that, too. I think that’s why I’ve become so fond of the little emoticons :) I agree, that nothing serious should be discussed in an email. Not only because of the chance of misinterpretation, but also because it’s a little easier perhaps to say something you don’t mean in an email when you don’t have to say it to someone’s face.

posts like this make me paranoid about my email etiquette…

One thing I do notice is the transition between two generations of users – the “instant message generation” (IMG) and the “old skoolers” (OS). The IMG is not as patient as the OS. I was once in the OS and now I am more IMG. I need to remind myself that my laptop and my hip are not conjoined twins.
