At least 5 people have asked me how to start a podcast and I have shied away from writing anything about it until now.  It’s been 15 episodes since I started my “webcast” and after all those Fridays out in my freezing garage, I am only now starting to get a handle on what its all about.  Here are a few essential tips that would be good to note:

  1. Get a good mic and a solid setup you can trust in.  You don’t want to worry about pops and clicks or the recording not taking when you are recording your podcast.
  2. Do it weekly or even less often but stay on a regular schedule.  Podcasting requires long strecthes of time to analyze what you do and get those magical ideas of inspiration that never come on demand.
  3. Set up your blog to create iTunes podcast feeds. I use the Wordpress Podpress plugin.  It’s really helpful.
  4. Think of your name and your content as a “brand” that you should be able to characterize and sell.  If it’s generic or common, rethink your branding.
  5. Have intro and closure music. Figure out how to work with a multi-tack audio recorder.  Check out my first one with intro music, I’m very excited about this one.
  6. Once you get your webcast the way you like it, get it on iTunes.  This is free and just takes some basic reading at the iTunes FAQ area.
  7. Let people in your social networks know you have a podcast. It’s quite amazing to me how much people are impressed with these.  Much more so than they are about a blog.  I use Twitter and Facebook to remind people about my latest episodes.

Stay tuned for more info as I learn it.  This is quite a journey.  Please subscribe to my webcast and tag along for the ride.  If you have any questions about podcasting or audio webcasting, please just ask!
