Teachers are bombarded with requests by parents and administration as well as fellow colleagues who request projects and time from you. It can be overwhelming. If you have trouble with boundaries and guarding your space, you can get eaten alive by all there is to do? So how do you know what to do? Base it on your ability to have peace at the end of the day. You have to be “present” for your kids, that is the number one consideration. Develop a mantra where you say your mission statement.
If the job your are asked to do defeats your vision or depletes your resources to do your job, then say no. The dynamite teacher is effective because she/he guards her/his space and doesn’t go crazy accepting every job offerred by somone patting her/him on the back. Just like painting, you should take on a doable area rather than try and do the who room willy nilly like a wild person. Watch what you accept to do in teaching, it could make you great or seal your fate.
