I’ve been wanting to use the pop culture speak “Fail” in a post title for months … I finally got my chance. Ma.gnolia had a melt down. Were any of you really vested in them? I was a user but rarely saved stuff there. If you lost everything are you pissed? Do you care? I guess they are starting as “gnolia” now. Sad. Bow out gracefully I say. It’s not like we are dying for another social bookmarks site … right?
Maybe this is a wakeup call to all of us trusting free websites with our data. Twitter maybe?
There was a meltdown at bookmark sharing website Ma.gnolia Friday morning. The service lost both its primary store of user data, as well as its backup. The site has been taken offline while the team tries to reconstruct its databases, though some users may never see their stored bookmarks again.

I’ve never heard of them.
I was a member of an actual paying site (I did get free membership) similar to flickr except that you could actually earn from linking to photos that you hosted on their site. Needless to say I was pretty upset when it went broke leaving hundreds of broken links on my photo blogs.
Somehow I reckon that may have been a little worse than losing some bookmarks, unless they were essential to what you do.
@Sire: Sorry to hear about that. That is why I do all my own image hosting through “Gallery2″ software I installed on my server. I do Flickr as well but back all that up. I had nothing on Ma.gnolia but I know they had a lot of people really into the service. This must be devastating to the owners.
Cool, I don’t have a server, but I’m a paying Flickr member and I don’t see them failing anytime soon.
@Sire: I’d say Flickr is a safe bet ;) FlickrDown is a great free app though if you want to do backups.
