“What I don’t think usually enters into this equation is that as we reduce funding for education, it falls on teachers, other staff members and community members to fill in the gaps. For example, many teachers already spend their own money providing basic supplies for their students. As teachers’ miniscule supplies budgets are further eroded due to cuts from the state, some will spend even more of their salaries to pay for essential classroom materials. Effectively, that is a tax on those teachers whose good deeds are helping to obscure one of the many systemic inadequacies.”
