Blog SEO tip

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

In effort to make my blogs as attractive as possible to sponsored post clients and advertisers, I’ve been wading through some SEO optimizer posts today. Some really good advice came from this one I found by searching blog seo and it’s a good one:

3. Use your secondary keywords in the body of your post

If you want to get listed for secondary keywords use them infrequently in the body of your post and pepper your blog titles or links with them appropriately.

Don’t overdo this or your posts will end up sounding unnatural and spammy to readers.
4. Use your keywords in the anchor text of links

Keyword in links have more importance than simple text.

Use your primary and secondary keywords in the anchor text of links when linking to other blog posts or to other pages on your main site.

Link keywords where they naturally appear in the body text, but again, don’t overdo it, or you’ll end up with spammy looking pages.
5. Make sure search engines can spider your blog easily

Set up your blog so that the side navigation bar is present on all pages.

Make sure your archives and previous posts are accessible from all pages of your blog so they get spidered easily.

I think the best seo strategy will come about after attending a sales training course. After all, aren’t we really just selling our blogs? Finding the tools that help me do that is what my seo research consists of.

There are lots of tools that will show the keyword denisity of the index but I need one that will suggest keywords based on a larger selection of posts. Still looking.

Wives Don’t Like Old Girlfriends and Girlfriends don’t like Old Wives

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

“It began I believe when Adam found Eve he woke up
and made her his wife On that very first day she
asked in dismay am I the first girl in your life
Wives don’t like old girlfriends you know that’s a
fact of life Wives don’t like old girlfriends and
girlfriends don’t like old wives [guitar]

Now if you don’t lie I’ll bet every guy has an old
flame that he thinks about Wives pretend not to
care but to her it’s as clear as if you were
thinking out loud Wives don’t like old
girlfriends… [guitar]
Oh it’s an awful sad affair and though it’s not
there anywhere Wives don’t like old girlfriends…”
[fiddle - guitar - piano]

Thanks to Suzy Bogguss for reminding us husbands of that. In the past I have received emails from a few exes asking that I add them to my Facebook, MySpace, Blogroll, what-have-you.  Upon careful contemplation, I have decided I aint gonna do that.  It’s almost like taking more mints than you need from the restaurant bowl when you’re nearly out the door.  Aint the memory enough?  What’s your take?

Notes: Stats this month are pretty flat.  I like to see Postcards at 10-15,000 visitors a month and it was way below that.  The main reason for this is because a human only has enough energy in a day.  As I have taken on the weekly podcast and committed to a schedule of posting through the blogs throughout the week, I have taken away some of that energy from Postcards.  For what I do, that’s not the end of the world.  I am making money through Text-Link-Ads and sponsored posts on three blogs.  For me (and my kids who get ice cream off my PayPal card) I’d rather share the energy across multiple blogs.  I feel good about my posts and the energy that I am broadcasting through the podcast.  The backlinks are holding, 2 blogs went up, one went down and the podcast remains at zero.

If you have any good ideas on getting backlinks, do tell.  Advertisers do look at that criteria.

No goals this month other than to keep my posting schedule and do the usual stuff I have been doing for months. As always, I want to be open to your questions and comments through this series. If you think of something you want explained, think of this blog as my wireless alarm The comment box is waiting for you. You’ve seen my results and read my notes, what do you have to say? Is there something I missed you’d like to discuss? How were your CAN results last month?

Trust at Work

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I think the two words are oxymorons sometimes.  Even though that has been my experience, I will not give up on the good people can do in friendships.  Like most people, I have been betrayed and stabbed in the back at work.  At the same time though, I’ve met people who were truly good to the core and these people keep me trusting in humanity. I hate it when people make loaded comments and seemingly keep you in the dark about things.  I am the kind of person who will tell you if I have a problem with you.  Unfortunately, not everyone is like that.  Many people see advancement or recognition as more important than people.  While I enjoy advancement and recognition, I take care to make sure they are never my primary motivator for doing what I do (I teach elementary school).  The trick for me with trust at work is learning the paramaters of healthy boundaries.

Another issue to discuss along these lines is the issue of boasting at work.  One person may innocently share at the water cooler about his/her new tv and another will feel the need to describe in vivid details his/her home theater furniture.

Do you trust people at work?

NOTES: December was a great month for traffic.  I had close to 12,000 visitors which is a record by about 5,000 visitors.  So what happened?  Well, my static “Crazy Quotes” page has gained the 5th place on a Google search of those 2 terms.  I have been getting 300-500 hits on that page a day!  This has really helped the normal traffic and boosted the totals immensely.  A special post or page can carry your blog without a need for traffic driving methods.

You may recall last month I decided I was done with empty clicker traffic such as Entrecard.  It hurt me at first but very soon my other methods far surpassed Entrecard.  I just feel that the quality of blogs there is not high and most people who came to my sites just clicked for their points and took off like a bat out of hell.  I chose to work with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks a little more.  You will see attractive buttons in all three sidevars linking to my profiles on the social networks I am working with.  Please add me to your lists!

My net suffered this month because I didn’t bother much with it.  I decided to put my mental health above straining over sponsored posts.  I did make a nice chunk of change without trying hard at all.

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t note my recent Google PageRank increase on all three blogs.  They used to be 1, 0, 0 and last night after the roll through, they became 2, 2, 2. This will enable me to get more paying posts and potentially more advertisers.  I am a very happy camper as you all know I have been working very hard to bring my PageRank values up.  Still though, I believe the future is going to be based on 100% pure transparency of stats and not on any dictator of value like PageRank.  That’s the reason I will continue to post CAN stats on all my blogs through 2009.

As always, I want to be open to your questions and comments through this series.  The comment box is waiting for you.  You’ve seen my results read my notes, what do you have to say? Is there something I missed you’d like to discuss?  How were your CAN results last month?

Blog Tips I Picked Up Doing Blog Reviews

BC Reviews

The reviewer learns from the reviewee

Reviewing peer blogs can be an excellent way to see bogging from “outside the box.”

I’ve been reviewing blogs let me tell ya!

I started a thread over at Blog Catalog offering anyone a blog review as long as it came to me prior to January 9th, 2009. I have a little time off work and I thought it would be fun to meet some new bloggers and maybe help some people out if possible. The response so far has been positive.

Ever bite off more than you can chew?

Just kidding.  Kinda.  I’ve managed to do 12 reviews in 3 hours and my neck hurts LOL. I’ve tried to be positive and comment on the PROS more than the cons. Some people have asked me to really criticize though so in some cases that is what I’ve done. Even though I am behind, I am committed to reviewing everyone who asks prior to the 9th. It is a blast and I am learning while I review.  I thought I would summarize a few things here on my personal blog that seemed common issues to me anyway:

Here’s the common roadblocks I see …

  • Too many ads on new blogs is annoying – My advice? Wait until your traffic warrants payment. Generally 15,000 visitors or more per month.
  • Intentional Branding is crucial – The name is the thing. Really think before you put up a name or a tagline. It is your currency and it is all you ever have in blogging. Many seem haphazard.
  • Many blogs have way too broad of a scope – How many malls does a town need? Be a STORE not a mall. I am reading so many blogs that have taglines like “a little of this a little of that and everything else.” It is YOUR job to tell us who you are and why YOU are worth reading.

I hope my words are helpful and not pissing people off over there. I aim to do right by my contribution to people’s art. If you’d like a review of your blog, I still have plenty of spare time before the 9th. Go ahead and submit it over at Blog Catalog and I’ll do my worst for ya!

Thanks to the Blog Catalog folks I’ve reviewed for giving me the privilege of reviewing your work.  If the 9th has passed and you’d like a review, ask me.  If I have the time I’d be happy to.

You Can’t Shop for Unique Ideas

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Sitting down with the forced intent to make something “new” is creative suicide. Bringing inspiration from somewhere or sometime else in your life is the key to sitting down and writing. Throughout the day, be imagining solutions. In your car, when that traffic threatens to give you a coronary, breathe. Use visualization to see solutions. The world needs and is drawn to creative thinkers. Be one. Getting a creative thought is not like going to Lowe’s and browsing bathroom faucets for your remodeled bathroom. Instead, you are creating a whole new faucet no one has ever seen before.

When a problem comes up in life at work or home, don’t curse it. Instead, think about a creative way to solve it. Writing is not the only thing that will benefit from doing this. Every aspect of your life will improve as you lean into creative solutions. As creativity flows through you, make sure you have lots of ways to record the ideas you get. Handheld recorders are great. So is a simple pocket pad you can carry around with you. To complete the idea of the title: “You can’t shop for unique ideas, they just come to you.”

Six Mo Better Blogging Tips

Friday, December 5th, 2008

Blog Bloke left a comment to my recent post 50 Blogging Tips that Deliver.  It was great and I wanted to make a whole new post about his valuable responses.  My original tips are numbered, then his comments are below that and finally my responses are in bold:

1. “Find your “niche” and become a slave to it.”

And also be sure to not choose a niche that is already saturated ;-)

Yes but that is an “advanced” concept.  I am talking to people who sit usually down to blog with zero focus.  Whether you write about a narrow focus like wakeboarding or the broadest like SEO/MMOL you are better off having a niche focus than not.  In the next class ;) your point would be a good one.

2. “Make posts over 100 words, around 200 words and usually not more than 400 words.”

Of course it depends on the type of post you are writing. If you write detailed tutorials like I do then it’s impossible to write a short post. (Btw isn’t this post over 400 words? :-)

Yes it is by absolute word count but if you count my sentences where I elaborate there are only about half of that.  In your lengthy tutorials it is likely the same situation.  I am speaking to writers who want to describe how much their day sucked etc.  If I want a “thesis” on someone’s day, I’ll listen to my wife.  LOL  PLEASE OUT THERE keep it to 200-400 words.  Of course there are always exceptions that work.  This is a guideline I have learned through time.

3. “Regularly post.”

I’ve hardly posted lately and my traffic is up more than 500%. So writing every day isn’t necessarily going to bring you good results. I would say that writing quality posts that are SEO optimized is far more important than quantity.

I call those “authority posts.”  I’ve also seen them referred to as “pillar posts.”  If you have enough of those, what you say is true.  For example, my “Crazy Quotes” page has a higher rating than my actual blog domain.  Still, if you want to gather followers/readers/contacts, posting regularly is a must.  After a few years maybe not so much though.

4. “Pick a simple theme and then test, test, test.”

Although I agree with the testing part (does it ever end) a “simple” theme isn’t always your best choice if you have a lot of content like I do. A nice looking site also doesn’t hurt to attract repeat visitors.

The Peter Principle says that every person will rise to their own level of incompetence.  I want to stay where I am competent.  To a beginner “simple” may mean using the Wordpress default.  To you or I it may mean using Ajax or not … just as an example.  I think simple was the wrong word choice so thanks for clarifying that.

5. “Here today, gone tomorrow: remember your post is not a bestseller in process. Write it and move on.”

Sometimes when we write a post we forget to optimize it for the SERPS. I’m always going back to my better posts and tweaking them for optimum performance. Like I said earlier good quality posts will bring you more traffic over the long term.

I only optimize my favorite posts.  The other ones get picked up anyway whether I liked them or not.  Can I get an AMEN?  No ryhme or reason sometimes.  I go back and tweak popular posts all the time, a very fruitful practice!

6. “Have a minimal sidebar. Most the “flair” out there is so distracting and lame.”

Agreed, too many bloggers have useless widgets such as showing what the weather is in your home town. But the sidebar/footer is a useful place to put your best posts, reader’s comments etc. So don’t neglect it.

Great thought about the sidebar.  Getting readers access to back posts is a great use of a sidebar!  Plus a little advertising as long as it is not too gaudy.

Hope that helps and cheers!

It helped very much, thanks for taking the time to read and comment.  Keep in touch!

New Priorities for Blogging

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

After much thought, I’ve decided to reinvent my mission statement.  The CAN page has changed and you’ll find the following(below) if you go there.

From the revised CAN page:

It has been said: “If you aim at nothing, you will surely hit it.”

That’s why I rate my own blogs monthly.

It’s also been said that if you do the right thing consistently, then the right things will happen to you.

I’m listing my mission statement here so you will better understand my what I do.  It is:

To create and innovate value for others.

These are my monthly “CAN” goals defined:

C- Circulation is measured by the number of posts and guestblogs I do each month.
A – Association is commenting I do on other blogs.
N – “Nods” are my Blog Safaris, or “link love” posts.

Each month I set new goals and record the results publicly.

Each category gets a percentage score then I add them together and divide by 300 to get the final rating.

I assign my blog a monthly rank value according to this scale:

  • 90-100%=my self-rating
  • 75-89%= my self-rating
  • 51-74%= my self-rating
  • 30-50%= my self-rating
  • 11-30%= my self-rating
  • 0-10%= my self-rating

Current and past monthly CAN. updates can be found here. I enjoy and welcome your comments on this topic.
