I’ve always sought to understand big ideas by looking at their history. In December of 2006 when I started blogging, I would change my focus and theme a lot because I was always seeking to understand this concept. I think I am now content with damienriley.com as an “online diary” but I understand that perceptions of that term vary person to person.
The article linked here on Wikipedia describes “Online Diaries” quite well and fascinatingly so I might add:
Online diary – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Here is the intro to the article. I recommend it to anyone who has wondered exactly what a “personal blog” is or what they might want theirs to be. Though I have shared some harsh words of opinion in the past, I think the only important thing is that you understand it is not a journal because others read it and that you should consider your audience much more so than a paper journal type you’d keep under your bed:
Online diaries began in 1994. As a community formed, these publications came to be almost exclusively known as online journals. Today they are almost exclusively called blogs, though some differentiate by calling them personal blogs. The running updates of online diarists combined with links inspired the term ‘web log’ which was eventually contracted to form the word blog.In online diaries, people write their day-to-day experiences, social commentary, complaints, poems, prose, illicit thoughts and any content that might be found in a traditional paper diary or journal. They often allow readers to contribute through comments or community posting.”

My blog is for me first and everyone else second. It is not unlike a diary in that I have shared some very intimate thoughts and feelings. It has also been a place to record events and chronicle the lives of my children.
And it has served as a great place to meet and learn about people I never would have encountered otherwise.
@Jack: You make an impressive stand in your comment. Do you think a diary that is published publicly, as yours and mine are, can really be classified as a diary? That was sort of my ‘question to the void’ (:-D
I just think of blog as meaning a pedestal to speak from. I just associate the word with an active website that has material on it likely written by amateurs who want their voice heard about something for some reason or other.
Thanks for sharing your blog. It was interesting looking through your postings. Good job!
My sister thinks I’m crazy for writing my thoughts and feelings online. She does have a point, but it’s therapy more than anything. I don’t have a lot of followers and that’s okay because I can be more open.
If someone stumbles upon my blog, that’s okay too. I have met some great people that I wouldn’t know otherwise, like Jack. Like KathyJani, however, I do also believe it’s a good place for amateur writers to have their voices heard.
I have a question for you. Have you been contacted by any companies to offer giveaways on your blog? How do you feel about that?
One more thing: I guess I haven’t figured out yet what I want my blog to be. It started as my own therapy and has continued on that way, but would I be a better, or even good, writer if I had a larger purpose? That’s something to think about. Thanks for that!
Thanks for your comment. People who call bloggers crazy for writing posts about their lives are misled. They live under the assumption that there is anonymity in our world today. That’s okay though, we should never retaliate, just tell them you enjoy it … if you do. You are as anonymous as you want to be on your blog and considering no one is anonymous in 2011, you might as well blog if you like it. On the giveaways … I get those emails. I recently got one from a prominent company but didn’t care enough to reply as I always do not. If the giveaway is something you might like to receive or your readers might like it, then go for it. It’s completely safe if that is what you are worried about. Personally I ould rather spend time on my blog and enterprise than on giveaways. They may get you some clout though if you are looking to increase readership in that way. That’s my take on it anyway.
