  1. WordPress self-hosted is the most tweak-able platform.
  2. Don’t lock into a theme choice until you’ve tried many.
  3. Integrate other online data into your blog, it keeps it interesting for you and your readers.
  4. Not all free services are worth your time or risk.
  5. Feed readers are a big part of your audience. Learn about them.
  6. Develop a criteria and be selective about who is on your blogroll links.
  7. People can prove easily offended on here (the net).
  8. Digg, others like Digg and social networks are not evil, but you just don’t need them.
  9. Find your “center” before you post. Write from that unique place.
  10. Think big thoughts on your blog.
  11. Learn the platfom and how to tweak it, don’t be helpless. There is a ton of free info online.
  12. Make a good “About” section and update it.
  13. Do regular backups.

Read more of what I have learned about blogging in my series of posts on what I have learned after nearly a year of blogging here. Happy TT!

Hey Damien, I’m not playing TT today, but thought I’d drop in.  You have good suggestions, as always.  Wish I would remember to back up!

I have been thinking about switching over to Wordpress for awhile now everyone seems to have only good things to say about it

Great advice, Damien….I still have to work on my Wordpress blog. I don’t like what I have there at all….so little time, though!!!
I still like the "center" advice! Everyone’s is different and that’s what makes everyone’s blogs unique! In general, I don’t think I think offensively, but I know people can be offended by pretty much anything. You can’t worry about that too much, in my opinion. Nobody would ever be able to say anything if they did.

I much prefer wordpress too.  I also think it’s really important to write from your own unique place, otherwise you soon run out of things to post about (I know, as it happened with my last blog!).  I must confess that I’m not very informed about the tweaking of themes.  I’m thinking about starting a blog just for experimenting with.  Great TT!
Mine is up here if you want to check it out.

i really like the one about finding your center before posting. one of my favorite bloggers doesn’t quite do that sometimes and it gets her into trouble. but i still enjoy her posts. thanks for the great list.

Useful post. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by a lot of it, but it’s still interesting to read. I would add that people shouldn’t blog on sites where people can’t comment unless they are members too (360 for example).

Nicholas: If you understood any of it, I am happy. However . . . it may be you haven’t experienced the same things I have hence you don’t get all the tips. What did you not understand? Thanks for your comment.
