This is a tough question that I part ways with many of my colleagues on. I feel that the old adage: “Practice makes perfect” is not true. It should be said: “Practice makes permanent.” If my students are sent home with difficult work, they may do it wrong and learn the groove of wrongness in that skill-set (I hope groove of wrongness makes sense to you).
I have parents question me often as to whether their child has homework since they are making sure their kid is not lying. I prefer to assign 20 minutes of silent reading at home than a bunch of worksheets. Let the kids do the hard work in class and then play when they are home. This has been my stance for a few years on homework. What’s your feedback?

I do homeschool, but my son went to kindergarten, and first grade, at a public school. I feel, no child, below 5th grade should have any homework at all. I think these primary years, should be spent learning with play, and family matters. Homework for older children, is probably necessary, if they do not complete it in school. Unless they are prepping for college, I do not think hours of homework, is appropriate.
Great comment!
