Traveling up the Fretboard

I had some fun a few years ago recording a tune I call “Soul Traveler.” I was fortunate enough to be able to play it live at a club and later use that recording to overdub a solo. It was a blast. Whenever I can record a show it is really awesome. Since I was 15 or so, I’ve been recording my live performances and then breking them down in my head as I drive in my car or as I’m lying in bed. One of my favorite jobs for this was when I delivered pizza for Pizza Hut. I wore out a lot of cassettes when I worked there. Here’s that recording I was referring to called “Soul Traveler.” Check out the solos they are pretty good (for an amateur).

Walking With the Lord

An old, dear friend facebooked my this morning telling me he was “walking with the Lord” again after being the “prodigal son.” I was very happy about this since I feel this is one of the greatest things we can do with out lives. I got to thinking though about it as a sub-culture idiom that could be interpreted differently by different people. I thought I’d make a list in this post of what “walking with the Lord” means to me:

  1. Trust in Christ.
  2. Believe Jesus is God.
  3. Pray as a desire more than an obligation.
  4. Share your experiences of faith with other believers. -and-
  5. Read/study the Bible.

What about you? When someone says they are “walking with the Lord,” what does it make you think of?

Holding Your Tongue

Posted in Self Improvement su button  Twitter button pingfm

That may sound like a gross activity but the rewards are boundless. When people around you are sharing how they are suffering, you automatically get the urge to offer comfort or worse: advice. The truth is, most the time I interject my 2 cents, I find myself regretting it. I learn just how dofferent their situation is than mine and how little my advice really has to do with what they are going through. The measure of a wise friend is not having an answer to every problem but rather to be discerning in what one says.

I love the quote: “A closed mouth gathers no foot.” It seems odd for me to be writing on this topic today. As a blogger, teacher, and guitar simger/songwriter, it seems all I ever do is talk and offer advice. At the same time I am learning more and more that being silent and listening a long time before I speak makes my advice more respected and welcomed.

In the coming year, you will likely run across someone who has lost their job, their home, their spouse, etc. These are tough times. Why not declare yourself a “listener first” and use restraint when you feel like giving advice. You’ll save yourself a lot of regret, take it from me. I read the other day that sleeping pills were selling off the shells. This is because people are having hard times and they really need someone like YOU to listen to them. Perhaps you are having hard times? I’d be happy to listen if you leave a comment. All the best and good luck in holding your tongue.

Combining Multiple Blogs with an .htaccess file

February 1st, 2010 I merged several blogs into this one. I needed a way to redirect three major blogs here so I looked into the base way to do it. I found, for my purposes, it was through an .htaccess file. It was a step away from blogging design and a step toward the basic coding of migrating a website. Not particularly fun, but very satisfying.

First I had an .htaccess file for my two other main blogs and put it in their root directory. The effect of the file was to do this:

Post was: postcardsfromthefunnyfarm.com/crazy-quotes/
Redirect now is: damienriley.com/crazy-quotes/

As I saod, the usual blogging design that I love doing had little to do with this “nuts and bolts” migration stuff.

The .htaccess code I used came from this helpful page on 301 redirects. My current code modified from there looks like this:

Options -Indexes
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/gerryriley.com/$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/music/$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/images/$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/rileycentral/$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/sgallery/$
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/gallery/$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.damienriley.com/$1 [R=301,L]

As you can see, this isn’t Wordpress coding. Still, after all was said and done and much testing, it worked!

I ran into a few snags. The most maddening of which was that my “Postcards” blog (over 2,000 posts and most popular blog) was originally set up in my server’s root directory. This caused every file or folder in that directory to be forwarded to my damienriley.com … this was really annoying.

I was able to remedy it by using “exception” statements and keeping certain directories from being forwarded. Once I did this I notice Google was starting to list my posts from my migrated blogs as living at the new blog. Woo hoo, that feels good. Now searches in google of site:http://www.postcardsfromthefunnyfarm.com or site:http://www.dynamitelessonplan.com return most of my old posts from those blogs and, when clicked, they redirect seamlessly to their new respective url at damienriley.com

.htaccess files are really not that complicated and if you are looking to migrate your blog somewhere, you should look into how they work. It’s miraculous. Oh, and by the way, I am so much happier running one blog instead of 5! ;) In week when the month ends I will report as usual the amount of money and popularity I gained through blogging. It should be interesting to see if the one did as good as the three main ones. Goes to show you a blogs design is just the icing on the cake of all you have to know as a blogger.

New Mental Illness Terms Coming Down the Pike

Posted in Psychology su button  Twitter button pingfm

When a person suffers from mental illness, she/he is really limited to a diagnosis of either bipolar or schizophrenia. I think this is grossly unfair and unfortunate. The brain is far too complicated an instrument to shove into two categories.

While most medical science agrees that true bipolar and schizophrenia do indeed exist, they also have finally started to agree that disorders like hoarding and other “inbetween” disorders need to be professionally defined. Bipolar and schizophrenia are often “over-prescribed” because there is just no other criteria extant. They are not helped in the way vitamins for hair loss can help fill in your locks. Mental illness diagnosis is far more maze-like.

I read this excellent article on mental health this evening and I recommend you check it out. Changing the DSM manual can do a lot to remove the stigma of a mental health diagnosis and help people get a firmer grip on handling their specific disorder. These are exciting time for psychology and mental health.

Think About What it’s Really For

Most the time on my job as a teacher I get the instant rewards of kids making me those ornately folded origami shapes that when opened say “Mr. Riley, you are the best teacher in the world.” I get stuff like that once in a while and it keeps my spirits high. Unfortunately, there are many other times when adults in my life let me down. When they treat each other (and me) poorly. Sometimes people around me are so immature it makes me want to just move to Berkeley and make money selling Herman Hesse books … of course, that is not an option. Drat.

I put those little notes from my students in a folder labeled “inspiration.” When I’m having a bummer day, I go through those notes and they remind me why I teach. They fill my spirit up. They remind me why I teach.

Whatever your job is, I am sure you can take the time to remember why you went into it. Our jobs will never be perfect but we can be an example of the way we want it to be. When no inspiration is coming from outside ourselves, we have to be “grown-ups” and find the strength within. Once we find it, we need to share it with others, even as hard as that may seem sometimes. Be the light of your life and remind others what it’s about.

What Will We Do With Less?

Posted in Inspiration su button  Twitter button pingfm

Things in the past 10 years have changed incredibly. Where college graduation used to require hours and hours in a classroom and commons, an online degree has now virtually surpassed that as the degree of choice. The changes continue. It is certain the next 10 years are going to be rough for teachers. Even if the economy comes back, it will take a long time for those dollars to “trickle down” into the state budgets for education. Already, we teachers are learning to do less with more. I of course am always looking for new ways to use less paper. My goal was once a “paperless classroom” but I have since learned that “less paper” is probably the only rational thing I can pursue. Kids need to practice with pencils and the dry erase get dry really fast. But what about the rest of the world and all the occupations therein? How much paper will the high-rise buildings save now that times are so tight. What positions will be deemed “unnecessary” and which ones will take on twice the work thereafter?

It is a daunting thought but I see a silver lining in all this. Perhaps we will develop human pathways to success we never would have thought of before. As I said, I am using my overhead and powerpoint lessons more than handouts and recycling anything I can at work. I have a childlike sense of wonder as to how the working world will become less “fat” in its waste of paper, ink, and a million other things that are useless. Our meetings are no longer catered by a ocal sandwich shop and I would assume that is the case for businesses across the grid. I’m curious to hear how your work is cutting costs. Have you learned some ways to save supplies? Let us know … I am sure this kind of stuff is happening and we should get ideas from each other to make the recession just that much more bearable. We should all be inspired by this opportunity to rise above and excel amid adversity.

Dream of a High Desert Acoustic Music Venue

Posted in Online Diary su button  Twitter button pingfm

Last night my co-worker Sue invited me and a few of our friends to hang out after work at Tio Pepe’s. This is a Mexican food restaurant with a bar on one side. As far as I know they do not feature live music, which is a drawback to me. I have a hope I will one day discover a high desert acoustic music scene. My wife and I decided, after the stressful week our family had, we could sure use a few drinks. It was a great meal my wife and I shared of 2 cheese enchiladas, rice and beans with a side of flour tortillas. We each also had 3 drinks (this is a world record for us in the past 8 years). I usually get out to play guitar somewhere for a small audience but just going out “for me” is something I don’t do much anymore. The last night I went out it was at a small venue for folk acoustic music. I loved it.

Having said that, I will tell you a few places I have played up here were great because “all eyes were on me” as I played my tunes. It is a chance for us all to be on the same wavelength and when the next musician got up there is was the same vibe with their show. Bars are different. They’re good but they’re different and while there are many restaurants and quite a few bars up here, there aren’t many live music venues.

I could barely hear the conversations of my friends last night. If I met anyone I couldn’t tell you their names. Not because I was drunk (I wasn’t) but just because it was so very loud in there. I think the High Desert needs a happy medium place to go. A bar to drink at, a restaurant to eat at, and a stage to host music at. The stage should be sound-proofed in its own room and the people in there will be there to share and enjoy music. We don’t have to call these music bars because they’ll have it all.

Everyone is always asking that question like when you sign up for a new emai of Facebook of something like that: “What would you do if you won the lottery.” I am pretty sure I would open a place like this. The High Desert needs a happy medium place to hang out. How about where you live? Any examples for me to start thinking about? Maybe I’ll buy a ticket today and start dreaming of rock bars up here in the high desert.

Getting Buy-in From Your Students

Posted in Teaching su button  Twitter button pingfm

Most the years I’ve taught I’ve been able to produce results in my students’ motivation. This year it has been especially challenging. Maybe it’s because the test and the academics thereof have become the primary focus of school. Perhaps this has understandably burned out student motivation. In doing so it’s given way to days consisting of “A, B, C, or D” answers. I’ve been trying some new things this year that are working to get buy-in and I wanted to share them with you:

  1. To go along with your assessment strategies, have them grade each other’s papers. This will add peer pressure and praise to the mix. It can help them realize what they do is observed by others.
  2. Give them “pseudo” assessments that look like the final standardized test in May. This will ease their nerves and help them see that success on the test can be attained.
  3. Send a note home with the score on one of these tests. Let parents know how their kids are doing but if you do so, make sure you have suggestions for parents on how to improve their child’s score.
  4. Have a lot of ongoing student recognition. Tomorrow I am allowing all the students who got 80-100% to have lunch with me in the classroom. These kids need to be rewarded for their student academic achievement and of course, this will probably rub off on some of the kids who scored below 80%.

I firmly believe that kids in elementary learning as well as higher will do better when they have buy-in. Just like a company offers stock options to employees to keep them productive, so teachers should seek buy-in from their students. Remember this from my experience and probably yours too about work in general:

To get results from students or workers, you must have their “buy-in.”

Getting It

Posted in Online Diary su button  Twitter button pingfm

Since Starbucks rolled into town, coffee has become the most sought-after beverage on the planet (it seems). Some days I make mine at home before work. Other times, they make it at work and I get it there. The latter means is becoming more and more impossible since people aren’t contributing to the source there. I actually don’t mind this all that much because the coffee they make there is very watered down. As I have shared here many times before, I prefer my coffee to be more like mud in anti aging face cream than a regular hot drink.

So … what’s a teacher to do in the morning when he’s in a hurry? I would say, if he has the money, Starbucks is the best bet! After that I would recommend making your own at home the way you like it. I take mine black and very rich. I use either one of my favorite home mugs or Dixie disposables with lids. I can’t say enough good about them. So …

How are you getting it?
